Diablo 4 Item Power Breakpoint Levels & Stat Ranges Explained

We explain the hidden Item Power in Diablo 4, the six breakpoint levels, and how this affects potential stat ranges on rerolls/upgrades.
Diablo 4 Item Power Breakpoint Levels & Stat Ranges Explained

Did you know that Diablo 4's Item Power has certain breakpoint levels, and if you go over them, stat ranges increase dramatically? Well, it is a rather complicated matter, and the breakpoint levels are invisible to players.

That's what we are here for, as we explain the Item Power breakpoint levels in Diablo 4, how these hidden levels affect your items when upgrading at the Blacksmith, and more, so let's dive in.

What is Item Power in Diablo 4?

The most basic explanation of Item Power in Diablo 4 is that the higher the Item Power of an item, the stronger it is. Item drops are loosely dependent on your character level, so you will see items with higher Item Power drop as you progress through the story and subsequent endgame activities and World Tier difficulty levels.

Base stats of an item scale directly with Item Power. For example, the higher the Item Power, the higher the DPS on any weapon. Item Affixes and their related buffs also increase in power with the Item Power level; for example, a gloves piece with Item Power 100 might have +2% Vulnerable damage, while one at Item Power 200 might have +6% Vulnerable damage. In the examples above, there's also a hidden Affix range, so the first item might have a range of +2-4.5%, while the second item might have a range of possible rolls from 5 to 9%

At certain Item Power breakpoint levels, the stats ranges explained in the previous section can see dramatic increases. To put it simply, a stat range increase from Item Power 120 to 125 (via a new drop or upgrade at the Blacksmith) could be 1%, but from Item Power 148 to 151, it might be a huge 7%.

This is due to Item Power breakpoint levels in Diablo 4. Basically, at certain breakpoints, loot becomes much more powerful. Check out the table below showing the Item Power breakpoint levels/ranges.

Breakpoint Level Diablo 4 Item Power Range
1 1 - 149
2 150 - 339
3 340 - 459
4 460 - 624
5 625 - 724
6 725 and above

Keep this table above in mind as we head into the next section of this guide, which explains how going over a certain breakpoint affects item stat ranges.

The very informative image above from Reddit user ThatJumpyJumpS showcases what happens when an item gets upgraded over an Item Power breakpoint level. As we touched on in the previous section, there's a huge jump in stat ranges.

What is more interesting is that if you upgrade an item at the Blacksmith and it goes over a certain level, the current stats/affixes will be rerolled. Why the reroll? Well, it is due to the new stat ranges for the item, with a new minimum and maximum. Due to the reroll, if an item goes over a certain breakpoint, there's a chance an item might become a bit worse if you are lucky enough to hit that minimum stat roll. Most of the time, however, it will still be an upgrade, and it could be a huge one!

Hopefully, it wasn't too confusing and will help you choose the best items for your build in Diablo 4! Why not take a breather to relax from all the data and explanations for this complicated topic by learning more about the world of Sanctuary in our video below?

That's everything you need to know about the hidden Item Power for every item in Diablo 4, the current breakpoint levels, and how upgrading an item past a certain breakpoint can affect its stats ranges!
