Lance Reddick, the prolific voice actor behind Commander Zavala in Destiny 2 passed away in March of this year leaving fans unsure of the character's future heading into the final expansion of the Light and Darkness saga. Today, Bungie announced in a blog post on their website that the Halo alumni voice actor, Keith David, will follow in Lance's footsteps to continue the character's performance in 2024's The Final Shape expansion.
In the blog post, Bungie said:
Commander Zavala has been central to the story we have been telling since the original Destiny, and we have plans to continue his journey.
Keith David, a prolific actor on the stage and in television, film, and games, will assume the English language voice of Zavala in The Final Shape and beyond. Separately, Lance’s existing lines in-game will remain untouched for the upcoming release.
Fans have been speculating the fate of Commander Zavala since Lance passed away earlier this year and the consensus up until now has largely been split between fans assuming that Bungie would either be forced to recast Zavala's English voice actor or kill the character off in some heroic fashion.
Keith David had this to say in regards to taking on this new role:
I am honored to continue the great work of Lance Reddick as Zavala. Lance captured the character's sense of integrity so wonderfully. It is my intention to continue that work.
The good news for fans is that we won't have to say goodbye to Commander Zavala anytime soon. With Bungie's commitment to leave Lance Reddick's lines untouched for the upcoming release, Lance's contributions to the 9-year-old franchise will remain intact. Whether Commander Zavala will appear in the remaining two seasons of the year is yet to be seen, but at least we know that we'll have our stalwart commander by our sides as we take on the Witness in The Final Shape early next year.
